This thread continues SMC's post on what freedom means in our individual lives and choices!
Personally, I only drive to town on average twice a week, usually once a week. This cuts down on emissions, gas usage.
As most of you may know, Wal-Mart is a corporation that treats its workers unfairly. They promised to carry American-made goods, but indeed most of them are Made in China -- not good. There's a class action suit recently filed against Wal-Mart concerning how they treat women employees. So I don't shop at Wal-Mart -- haven't for over 3 years.
I search for American-Made products online. I gave a few links that offer related links on the other thread. Recently I found a brand of iron patio furniture made in America and found two store chains locally that carried it. I made my purchase and was proud of myself.
From furniture to all kinds of items, you can find out online whether they're made in America or not. You can also find out what companies in America are environmentally responsible as well as ethically responsible in their hiring and pay practices. I'll try to find links on those searches. If any of you can find them, please do post!
We're considering buying a used diesel engine car. Biodiesel fuel is now being manufactured in our state and if you do a search on biodiesel, you can find out whether your state offers pumps in your local area. It's a great way to transition, right now, to alternative fuels and energies where transporation is concerned. Biodiesel is a combination of petrol based and vegetable oil based fuel-- 80/20 and even at this ratio, the emissions become 0 !
For the home here are just a couple of alternative energy and responsible living links:

Do you use organic fertilizers instead of chemical? Do you use pesticides instead of environmentally friendly remedies?
Do you recycle?
Do you buy glass containers on products instead of plastic ones? Do you bring your own bags for groceries instead of using plastic ones?
Do you buy organic poultry, eggs, and meats? When you support the huge conglomerate chicken factories, like Tyson, you promote huge American companies, yes, but the substance you put into your body is compromised. It is unhealthy and may cause disease. Milk, poultry, and beef are especially ridden with anti-biotics and other hormones that aren't good for us.
On the vegetables and fruits, you're getting pesticides and you may be contributing to unfair work practices as well because illegal aliens are often employed at extremely low wages and poor working conditions to get that food on your table.
Better to pay a little more, and consume a little less, than to continue to buy the crap that the major food industries produce!
Support:
organic farming
recycling
American made clothing and textiles
drink non-floridated, non chlorinated water
car pooling and alternative fuels
home energy independence and conservation
glass and other biodegradable packaging
simplicity in living
alternative medicines of organic orgin
