This morning I heard a strange sound near the fireplace and saw a flickering. A little bird had somehow gotten into our woodburning insert and was flying around at the window! Well, without thinking, I immediately opened the insert door and out he flew! He ended up on the window sill of a high window above our front door. I tried opening the front door and extending my duster up, but he continued to flap and go back and forth thinking he could fly out and not knowing what a window was! Poor thing!
I hate to admit it, but I called my husband for any ideas on the matter and he reminded me that we have a fishing net out in the garage. So I, naturally, used some duct tape to attach the net to a long wooden stick leftover from our recent fence project, and by going up a few stairs on the stairway, I could get a good angle to reach him. But instead he hid in the corner and went into still mode, as though I had hurt him. I actually thought I had injured him and felt sad about it. So at that moment I called on the angels to help me free this little bird and just went back to the computer knowing somehow he would get out. And yes, I left the front door open.
I got up once to do something and noticed he had started flapping his wings in frustration again and decided to leave him alone. No sooner had I returned to the puter than the front door slammed shut! Could he have flown out the door and the angels closed it after him? I actually entertained the thought. But upon investigating, I found he had flown into the diningroom where the windows were quite low and he was trying again at that windowsill. I knew I could get him with the net at that low height, so I got it from the garage again and even at that angle he could still move about and escape the net. But suddenly he just stood there and through the net I gently held his little body, all the while assuring him that I would be gentle and not hurt him. He didn't struggle but kept still in my hand with the soft net between him and me and I carefully carried him out the front door and let him down on the rocks in front of the porch. He stood there for at least a minute and looked up and me and I smiled at him and said "you're welcome," and then he flew off!
I know the angels were assisting me. I don't know how, but they did!
